Border Patrol seizes 92 pounds of cocaine in California

Two U.S. citizens have been arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol for allegedly attempted to smuggle 92 pounds of cocaine into the country.

The agency said Saturday The drug bust occurred July 15 during an inspection at the U.S. Border Patrol Highway 86 immigration checkpoint in Indio, California.

The discovery was made after a Border Patrol dog alerted the agents to a concealed person or the presence of drugs, according to the agency.  The agents then found 34 packages wrapped in brown cellophane hidden in the ceiling of the vehicle.

The total seizure, which was made in the El Centro sector in Southern California, is worth more than $1.04 million, the agency said.  

“It’s way too hot for this type of ‘snow’ in the El Centro Sector,” Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino said in a statement. “Indio Station agents melted down plans to bring this poison to drug users in America, and I applaud those agents for bringing the fight to bad people and bad things here in the Premier Sector.” 

The vehicle, drugs, and suspects have been turned over to the Imperial Valley Border Enforcement Security Task Force for further investigation.

The arrests come after agents in El Centro found 450 Pounds of liquid methamphetamine in a gas tank on July 8, according to Newsweek. The agency has confiscated 55,771 pounds of cocaine in the 2023-2024 fiscal year so far, as of June.
