The Trump administration said the new deal was largely the same as what was previously agreed on, and that the two presidents could sign a memorandum of intent related to the deal as early as next Thursday.

President Donald Trump on Thursday told reporters that he expects to sign a long-awaited minerals deal with Ukraine soon, which comes after the initial signing plan blew up over a spat between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky met with Trump and Vice President JD Vance to sign the original agreement at the White House in February, but the meeting turned sour after Vance accused Zelensky of being disrespectful, and Trump chastised him for not expressing appropriate gratitude for U.S. aid in its war with Russia.

The Trump administration said the new deal was largely the same as what was previously agreed on, and that the two presidents could sign a memorandum of intent related to the deal as early as next Thursday, per The Hill.

“We have a minerals deal,” Trump told reporters during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. “Which I guess is going to be signed on Thursday … next Thursday? Soon. I assume they’re going to live up to the deal, so we’ll see."

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the exact date and location of the signing was still being arranged, but the U.S. is aiming for April 26.

“It’s substantially what we agreed on previously, the president was here, we had a memorandum of understanding, we went straight to the big deal … and I think it’s an 80-page agreement, and that’s what will be signed,” Bessent said.
