Trump to sign order temporarily suspending immigration due to coronavirus
Trump tweeted the news on Monday evening, saying he wanted to protect American jobs.
President Trump announced late Monday he is signing an executive order temporarily suspending immigration into the United States because of the coronavirus.
In a tweet, the president said the move will also help protect American jobs in an economy made fragile by the pandemic.
"In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!" the president tweeted.
Trump swiftly earned praised from some legislators and condemnation from others.
Texas Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro described Trump's decision as "authoritarian-like," while Arizona Republican Rep. Paul Gosar thanked the president.
