President Joe Biden will not enforce a potential federal ban on the app TikTok if the Supreme Court fails to block or delay the law by Sunday, an unnamed U.S. official told the Associated Press on Thursday.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the matter soon, but it is not clear if they will do so by the Sunday deadline. However, they are expected to release a ruling on Friday that could be about the ban. The court heard oral arguments on the matter last week.

Biden signed the law that requires TikTok's China-connected parent company ByteDance to divest its shares of the app or be banned from U.S. app stores last year. The law also allows the U.S. to delay the ban if a viable deal is in the works.

The law stems from concerns that the app could operate as an extension of the Chinese government, and endanger U.S. national security. But the company has strongly denied being "owned or controlled by any government or state-controlled entity."

If Biden does not enforce the ban, the implementation and enforcement of the ban will be up to President-elect Donald Trump. The incoming president previously called for a ban on the platform, but has recently expressed interest in saving it, or delaying the ban.
