The U.S. State Department on Thursday issued a "worldwide caution" alert about the possibility of demonstrations at U.S. and Israeli facilities on Friday, Oct. 25.

The State Department said social media posts on multiple platforms have called for demonstrations at the facilities and encouraged Americans to avoid demonstrations. It also urged Americans to exercise increased caution when near large gatherings.

"The U.S. government reminds U.S. citizens to avoid rallies and demonstrations whenever possible and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings as even peaceful demonstrations have the potential to turn violent without warning," the department said in the alert.

American citizens that are currently overseas are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to remain updated on alerts, and follow the department on social media.

The warning comes during a period of heightened tension in the Middle East, triggered by Hamas's attack on Israel last year. The alert comes two weeks after the one year anniversary of the conflict, which has also expanded to include the terrorist organization Hezbollah in Lebanon.

It also comes amid a period of increased antisemitism and Islamophobia in the United States.
