Burial service for George Floyd in Houston will be private, following public memorial services

George Floyd, whose death after a police arrest sparked a nationwide protest against police brutality toward black Americans, will be buried Tuesday in his home state of Houston.

Floyd died May 25 after an arrest by Minneapolis police in which an officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes. He was 46. 

The burial ceremony will be private and reportedly include a horse-drawn carriage carrying Floyd’s gold-colored casket. However, the public is being invited to view the procession along sidewalks.

Floyd will be laid to rest next to his mother, according to the Associated Press. 

The ceremony follows several public memorials, including one Monday in which an estimated 6,000 people attended, including presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. 

The Rev. Al Sharpton will reportedly speak at the burial service.

Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather will pay for the funeral services, a Mayweather representative last week told reporters.
