Trump ally Steve Bannon to conclude prison sentence next week

Steve Bannon will be released from federal prison as scheduled next week, the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) wrote in a letter on Monday, despite his attempts to serve the remainder of the sentence at his Washington D.C. home.

Bannon was sentenced to 120 days in prison after a jury convicted him on two Contempt of Congress charges in 2022 for not complying with a Congressional subpoena. A judge had allowed Bannon, who was first-time offender, to delay his sentence while he appealed the convictions but he was ordered to report to prison in Connecticut in July.

The bureau told Bannon that he would be released as scheduled on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Bannon had hoped to serve part of the sentence under house arrest, but a warden at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury said the request came too close to the release date for it to be processed.

“Mr. Bannon has insufficient time on his sentence to process a referral and secure approval for ten days of home confinement placement,” warden Derek Puzio wrote in a letter reported by CNN. “The Regional Reentry Management Office overseeing your client’s release area advised their Residential Reentry Centers, which monitor home confinement placements, that they will not accept placements under 30 days.” 

Although Bannon will be released from the Connecticut prison in just over one week, he still faces criminal charges related to an alleged scheme to defraud donors over the construction of a border wall on the United States southern border.

Bannon's trial for the alleged border wall scheme will take place in December. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include conspiracy, fraud, and money laundering.
