Hispanic caucus criticizes Biden for considering restrictions on asylum
CHC chairwoman Rep. Nanette Díaz Barragán said the crisis at the southern border need to be addressed, but the caucus opposes any changes to asylum laws.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) is denouncing the Biden administration as it is reportedly considering imposing new restrictions on asylum claims.
CHC chairwoman Rep. Nanette Díaz Barragán, D-Calif., addressed on Thursday that the crisis at the southern border needed to be addressed, but the caucus opposes any changes to asylum laws.
“But it is unbelievable to hear that the White House would consider Executive Actions to prevent or restrict migrants from seeking asylum at our Southern Border and possibly use some of the same methods as former President Trump,” she said in a statement, according to The Hill.
According to reports, President Joe Biden is considering using authority to “suspend the entry” of foreign nationals whose interests do not benefit the U.S.
This presidential authority has been used by the Biden administration with countries such as Russia and Myanmar.
Barragán said that "enforcement only" policies don't work, and the change would negatively impact immigrant communities.
