Trump removes director of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
"If President Trump is serious about lowering costs and capping credit card interest rates, he needs a strong CFPB and a strong CFPB Director," Sen. Warren says
President Donald Trump has removed the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Rohit Chopra, who announced his departure on Saturday.
"Every day, Americans from across the country shared their ideas and experiences with us," Chopra posted.
“You helped us hold powerful companies & their executives accountable for breaking the law, and you made our work better,” he added.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who helped create the agency when former President Obama was in office, reacted to Chopra's departure on social media.
"If President Trump is serious about lowering costs and capping credit card interest rates, he needs a strong CFPB and a strong CFPB Director," she said. "If he and Republicans decide to cower to Wall Street billionaires and try to destroy the agency, they will have a fight on their hands."
Chopra had previously said he would leave his post early if Trump asked. CFPB directors are able to serve a five-year term.
