Trudeau claims Canada will not 'back down' on the eve of US tariffs
Trudeau, who previously met with Trump in Florida, claimed that Canada's capital of Ottawa would respond to the tariffs as necessary until the U.S. removed the taxes.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday told the advisory council on Canada-U.S. relations that his country would not back down from President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 25% tariff on the U.S.'s two neighboring countries.
Trump on Thursday confirmed his early-administration plan to impose the taxes on Mexico and Canada will go into effect on Saturday, and claimed both countries have treated the United States "unfairly" when it comes to trade.
The president said the reasons for the tariffs are because of drugs coming into the U.S. and the amount of illegal immigration coming into the country through both borders.
Trudeau, who previously met with Trump at the U.S. president's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, claimed that Canada's capital of Ottawa would respond to the tariffs as necessary until the U.S. removed the taxes, according to The Hill.
“We’re showing the new American administration that they have a strong partner in Canada when it comes to upholding border security, all while simultaneously underscoring that we won’t back down, that if tariffs are implemented against Canada, we will respond,” Trudeau said. “We won’t relent until tariffs are removed and, of course, everything is on the table."
The comment comes despite Trudeau's looming resignation, which is expected to take place after his replacement is selected.
