Ten prison guards in New York were charged Wednesday in connection with the fatal beating last month of a 22-year-old inmate, with two being charged with murder.

Prisoners who were interviewed said several guards severely beat fellow inmate Messiah Nantwi at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in upstate New York.

The March 1 beating sent Nantwi to a hospital where he died. 

The indictment reads that Nantwi “died due to massive head trauma and numerous other injuries to his body,” according to an ABC News affiliate.

The two guards charged with second-degree murder are Jonah Levi and Caleb Blair.
