NYC to pay $21,500 each to 320 George Floyd protesters over police 'kettling'
"This was essentially a premeditated show of force against people who were demonstrating against police violence," said Ali Frick, who represented the protesters.
The city of New York will award tens of thousands of dollars each to a multitude of protesters on whom police used a "kettling" technique to confine during a demonstration over the 2020 death of George Floyd.
Protesters had challenged their police confinement as part of a June 2020 demonstration within the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, the Washington Times reported. The "kettling" technique employed during the incident involves the formation of human walls by police with the aim of limiting the protesters to a certain area.
"This was essentially a premeditated show of force against people who were demonstrating against police violence," said Ali Frick, who represented them.
The city will pay $21,500 to 320 individuals as part of a settlement agreement, which still needs approval from a judge. Such a settlement would be one of the largest ever paid to people involved in a mass arrest, the outlet noted.
