Jury awards $1.5 million to prosecutor suing Los Angeles District Attorney Gascon for retaliation
The prosecutor's case is the first of 17 retaliation-related lawsuits against Gascon.
A Los Angeles County jury awarded a prosecutor $1.5 million in a retaliation lawsuit filed against District Attorney George Gascon, who is facing multiple legal battles over similar complaints.
Prosecutor Shawn Randolph won her lawsuit Monday, Fox News reported. She said in the case that she was transferred and effectively demoted for criticizing Gascon's policies, which some law enforcement officials have called soft on crime.
Randolph, who worked in the district attorney's juvenile division, was transferred to the parole division after she objected to polices that reduced charges against underage offenders, including those convicted of violent crimes.
Randolph's case is the first of 17 retaliation-related lawsuits against Gascon.
The district attorney's office said it is "disappointed by the jury's verdict" but it stands by the "decision to reassign this and other attorneys to new positions within the office."
The office also said, "We will consider our options over the next several days."
