Florida Judge Cannon says she won't block the release of Special Counsel Jack Smith's report
Cannon will have a hearing later this week about parts of the report on classified documents.
Florida Judge Aileen Cannon stated Monday that she would not block the release of Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith's report on President-elect Donald Trump's 2020 election interference case.
Smith, before resigning this past weekend, had concluded a two-part investigation into Trump, with the second part related to Trump after his first presidency, which ended in 2021, having taken classified documents with him to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Cannon will have a hearing later this week about parts of the report on classified documents, according to CNN.
Last week, a federal appeals court declined to block the department's release of Smith's final report on Trump's alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Trump had requested the Supreme Court block the entire release of the report.
Cannon previously dismissed Smith's Mar-a-Lago case against Trump, asserting that he was improperly appointed. Smith had brought a separate case in D.C. over his election challenges, though that case was stalled due to court decisions on presidential immunity and Trump's election rendered it defunct.
