Senate Democrats unite behind filibuster on GOP's transgender athletes bill
The legislation was stalled in a 51-45 split, which saw all Republicans vote in favor of the bill and all Democrats oppose. The stall comes despite pressure from the White House to pass the bill.
Senate Democrats on Monday night declined to jump ship and support a bill that would ban transgender athletes from competing in women sports.
The legislation was stalled in a 51-45 split, which saw all Republicans vote in favor of the bill and all Democrats oppose, according to Fox News. The stall comes despite pressure from the White House to pass the bill.
The bill, introduced by Alabama GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville, sought to codify President Donald Trump's No Men in Women's Sports Executive Order. But Republicans would have needed nine Democrats to overcome the filibuster based on the final vote.
The legislation also comes after a New York Times poll in January found that 79% of respondents believe transgender athletes should not be competing against biological female athletes, including some Democrats.
Tubervillle urged Democrats last week to join his effort, highlighting the bipartisan support he's seen among voters in the swing states of Arizona and Pennsylvania.
"Almost 70% of Arizonans don’t believe men should compete in girls’ and women’s sports. In Pennsylvania, this number rises to nearly 75%. And in Michigan, nearly 78% of voters want men out of women’s sports," Tuberville posted on X. "I hope my Democrat Senate colleagues from these states will LISTEN to their constituents."
The appeal went to moderate Democrats in the swing states, including Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman, who has voted with Republicans in the past.
