The Senate on Tuesday night confirmed Howard Lutnick as Commerce secretary in a 51-45 vote, making him the latest Trump Cabinet nominee to be confirmed by the Republican-led chamber.

President Donald Trump nominated Lutnick, who was CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald on 9/11, last year after Lutnick served as his presidential transition co-chairman.

"Howard Lutnick’s story is inspiring. It’s a lesson in resilience, in determination, in the American spirit," Senate Majority Leader John Thune shared on X. "It demonstrates the type of person he is, and the type of public servant that he’ll be."

Lutnick will be tasked with leading the administration's tariff and trade agenda. The nominee testified during his confirmation hearing that he has advised Trump to pursue across-the-board tariffs to rebuild reciprocity with the U.S.'s trading partners.

Trump appeared to follow the advice last week by signing a presidential memorandum titled the "Fair and Reciprocal Plan," on trade, which the White House said will "seek to correct longstanding imbalances in international trade and ensure fairness across the board."
