Schumer dismisses concerns about his leadership amid backlash over his support of advancing CR
“I think I had the overwhelming support in my caucus, and so many of the members thanked me and said, ‘You did what you thought was courageous, and we respect it,'" Schumer said. "I think my caucus and I are in sync."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Friday night dismissed concerns about his leadership after he supported ending debate on the recently passed Continuing Resolution (CR).
Schumer faced heavy criticism from Democrats in both chambers over his decision, which he had announced Thursday night. Some Democrats even called for him to step down as party leader, and others encouraged other New York Democrats to try to primary him.
The senator told CNN's Jake Tapper that he believes he has the support of the majority of his caucus, and claimed he believed he made the right decision.
“I think I had the overwhelming support in my caucus, and so many of the members thanked me and said, ‘You did what you thought was courageous, and we respect it,'" Schumer said. "I think my caucus and I are in sync, and everyone knew what I was doing and respected it."
The senator stated on Thursday that he did not support the House-led resolution but that the 30-day alternative put forth by Democrats would not pass both chambers. He also claimed that the CR would be better than a shutdown.
Although the Senate passed the CR, with the help of 10 Democratic and Independent senators, President Donald Trump still needs to sign the legislation by midnight to avoid the shutdown.
