Minnesota Democratic Sen. Tina Smith announced Thursday that she won't seek 2026 reelection.
Smith made the announcement on a video posted on social media in which she said she wants to spend more time with her family after 20 years of work in the public sector, according to the Associated Press.
“This decision is not political," the 66-year-old Smith said. "It is entirely personal.”
Her decision will likely complicate Democrats' plans to retake control of the Senate next year because they will have to defend her seat in an open race, instead of having a incumbent to defeat, which is historically an uphill challenge for an opposing political party.
