Fetterman becomes first Democrat to cosponsor the 'Laken Riley Act' in Senate

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., became the first Democrat to co-sponsor the "Laken Riley Act" in the Senate.

Sens. Fetterman, Katie Britt, R-Ala., and Ted Budd, R-N.C., are currently backing the legislation, according to a Punchbowl News.

"This bill sells itself, but I will be living in the Senate hallways until it passes if need be," Georgia GOP Rep. Mike Collins wrote on the social media platform, X. "Very grateful for  @SenFettermanPA. Now we need Georgia's Senators to step up."

As of now, Fetterman is the first Democrat to cosponsor the legislation. 

The bill provides law enforcement with more authority to detain illegal immigrants who have been accused of crimes.

Earlier this year, Georgia nursing student Laken Riley was murdered by Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant, who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The House is expected to vote on the legislation today.
