U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee’s brother was shot to death Tuesday during a series of violent events in Michigan, and a relative has been identified by sheriff’s authorities as the suspect.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson told a news conference that Timothy Kildee, 59, was fatally shot in his home in Vienna Township by his 27-year-old son after a confrontation.

Authorities did not identify the son by name, but said he was hospitalized after fleeing his father’s home in a stolen pickup truck that crashed at a high rate of speed.

"The suspect has serious injuries," Swanson said. Charges have not yet been filed.

Congressman Kildee, a Michigan Democrat, issued a statement mourning the loss of his brother and the tragedy that has impacted his family.

“Our family is grieving and heartbroken. There are no words to describe the loss of a beloved brother and family member, especially in such a terrible tragedy,” Kildee said. “I thank the community for honoring my family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
