AOC asks Pam Bondi whether she is 'under investigation' over her migrant webinar

"Educating the public about their rights, especially in a time of rising uncertainty, is a key part of our responsibility as elected officials," she wrote. "A government that uses threats of DOJ investigations to suppress free speech is a threat to all, regardless of political ideology."

New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez on Friday sought clarification from Attorney General Pam Bondi on whether she was under investigation for her office having hosted a webinar that educated illegal migrants on how to interact with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.

The congresswoman's office hosted the webinar, titled "Know Your Rights," on Feb. 12, though she did not appear in it. AOC was quickly condemned by President Donald Trump's border czar Tom Homan, who claimed that he asked the Justice Department to investigate her.

Ocasio-Cortez said that she and her office have not heard from the Justice Department about an investigation so far, but wanted clarity on whether they "yielded to political pressure."

“I write to request clarity on whether the DOJ has yielded to political pressure and attempts to weaponize the agency against elected officials whose speech they disagree with,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “Over the past two weeks, 'Border Czar' Tom Homan has gone on multiple forums threatening political prosecution against me, citing resources I distributed informing my constituents and the American public of their constitutional and legal rights.”

The congresswoman claimed that Homan's behavior posed a threat to "free speech," and that "threatening criminal proceedings for exercising the First Amendment," is a First Amendment violation.

"Educating the public about their rights, especially in a time of rising uncertainty, is a key part of our responsibility as elected officials," she wrote. "A government that uses threats of DOJ investigations to suppress free speech is a threat to all, regardless of political ideology."

Ocasio-Cortez asked that Bondi and her office respond by March 5.
