Village People to perform at multiple inaugural events after Trump adopts hit 'YMCA'
The group has seen a resurgence in the popularity of their hit song "Y.M.C.A." recently, after Trump used the music to dance to at his campaign rallies last year. Trump has been playing the song since 2020.
The Village People band on Monday announced that it has accepted an invitation from President-elect Donald Trump to perform at multiple of his inaugural events this coming weekend.
The group has seen a resurgence in the popularity of their hit song "Y.M.C.A." recently, after Trump used the music to dance to at his campaign rallies last year. Trump has been playing the song since 2020.
Victor Willis, the band's frontman and lead singer, admitted that the decision to attend the events will be controversial, but said he hopes the band's music will unite the country.
"We know this wont [sic] make some of you happy to hear, however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics," Willis said in a post on Facebook. "Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost.
"Therefore, we believe it's now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump."
Willis did not specify what events the group will perform at, but one such event will reportedly be the Inaugural-Eve Ball hosted by Turning Point USA, according to NBC News. The event will include guests such as Vice President-elect JD Vance, Donald Trump Jr., and multiple Cabinet nominees.
Country music star Carrie Underwood will also attend at least one event, the official Inauguration, where she is expected to perform "America the Beautiful."
