White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Tuesday that the Trump administration is opening up the press room to alternate media such as podcasters and content creators on TikTok.

"We welcome independent journalists, podcasters, social media influencers and content creators to apply for credentials to cover this White House," Leavitt said during her first press briefing.

She said that the seat in the front of the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room that is often occupied by the press secretary's staffer will be called the "New Media Seat" where members of alternative media will sit if their applications are accepted to cover the White House.

"We encourage anybody in this country whether you're a TikTok content creator, a blogger, a podcaster ... if you are producing legitimate news content no matter the medium, you will be allowed to apply for press credentials to this White House," Leavitt said.

She said that applicants can apply at the White House's new media website.

During the press briefing, Leavitt also discussed some of President Donald Trump's accomplishments, such as arresting illegal migrants and directing federal agencies to end Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs.

Prior to being the press secretary, Leavitt served as Trump's national press secretary for his 2024 campaign.
