Peter Yarrow from the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary dies at 86

Peter Yarrow of the famed folk music trio Peter, Paul and Mary died on Tuesday at the age of 86 in New York, according to his publicist Ken Sunshine. 

The musician, who co-wrote one of the trio's most successful songs, "Puff the Magic Dragon,” died after struggling with bladder cancer for the past four years, per the Associated Press.

“Our fearless dragon is tired and has entered the last chapter of his magnificent life. The world knows Peter Yarrow the iconic folk activist, but the human being behind the legend is every bit as generous, creative, passionate, playful, and wise as his lyrics suggest,” his daughter Bethany said in a statement.

The group, which was successful in the 1960s, was also famous for covering and bringing attention to two of Bob Dylan's songs that made the top 10, including "Blowin' in the Wind." 

Yarrow is survived by his wife Mary Beth McCarthy, his daughter Bethany, his son Christopher, and his granddaughter Valentina. He is also survived by bandmate Noel Paul Stookey. Mary Travers died in 2009.
