Former Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel joined CNN on Thursday as a senior political and global affairs commentator, the network announced.
Emanuel, who served as ambassador during former President Joe Biden's administration and as White House chief of staff under former President Barack Obama, has more than three decades of experience in Democratic politics.
"Emanuel will bring his extensive knowledge of American politics and international affairs to CNN’s on-air programming," the network said in a press release.
The former ambassador promoted U.S. interests in Japan from 2021 through 2025, and resigned just before President Donald Trump took office. He is expected to be replaced by former ambassador to Portugal George Glass.
Emanuel also represented the fifth district of Illinois in the House of Representatives from 2002 through 2008.
