CNN crew arrested live on-air during Minneapolis riots

Police in Minneapolis early Friday morning arrested several CNN crew members during a live broadcast of the riots in the city. 

Police said the three-member crew was released upon authorities confirming it was part of the media. 

Video of the event was shown live on the cable news network. Correspondent Omar Jimenez was seen being put in handcuffs and led away. 

Police claimed that the crew was arrested because it had failed to move out of the way of an advancing police line. 

The journalists were later released after about an hour in custody, "once they were confirmed to be members of the media," the Minneapolis State Patrol said later in a statement.

CNN disputed the department's claim that the journalists had not identified themselves initially. "[O]ur CNN crew identified themselves, on live television, immediately as journalists," the network said on Twitter. 

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, meanwhile, "deeply apologize[d]" to the network after the incident, describing the arrests as "unacceptable."
