Scientific American chief resigns after blasting Trump supporters as 'fascists' during election

The editor-in-chief of the science magazine "Scientific American" on Thursday resigned her post after she faced backlash for calling supporters of President-elect Donald Trump "f***ing fascists." 

The editor, Laura Helmuth, made the comments on Election Night when Trump led and eventually won the election. She has since confirmed that she is leaving her post after a 4.5 year tenure at its helm, Fox News has reported.

Helmuth apologized to the country for the election results in a series of posts on the social media platform Bluesky last week, observing that Trump supporters were the "meanest, dumbest, and most bigoted" group.

"Every four years I remember why I left Indiana (where I grew up) and remember why I respect the people who stayed and are trying to make it less racist and sexist. The moral arc of the universe isn't going to bend itself," she wrote in the series. "Solidarity to everybody whose meanest, dumbest, most bigoted high-school classmates are celebrating early results because f*** them to the moon and back."

She later wrote an apology to young voters for her generation, observing that Generation X was full of "f***ing fascists." The editor also shared an article on Bluesky about how to cope with "election grief." 

Helmuth apologized to "Scientific American" readers in later posts, admitting that her own personal views did not reflect that of her publication, despite their endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris. 

"I respect and value people across the political spectrum. These posts, which I have deleted, do not reflect my beliefs; they were a mistaken expression of shock and confusion about the election results," Helmuth said. "I am committed to civil communication and editorial objectivity."
