Bon Appetit top editor Rapoport resigns over photo of him in racially insensitive costume

Bon Appetit magazine editor in chief Adam Rapoport has resigned after the emergence of a 2013 Halloween photo of him dressed as a Puerto Rican stereotype.

The 16-year-old  picture of Rapoport and his wife, also in costume, recently began circulating on Twitter, sparking rebuke from magazine staffers and others. 

The Twitter picture is a screenshot from his wife’s private Instagram account and shows Rapoport wearing a large, heavy chain, a do-rag and a baseball cap, according to the Associated Press. 

In an Instagram post Tuesday, Rapoport said he was stepping down as editor “to reflect on the work that I need to do as a human being.”

The incident has also resulted in complaints from employees at the Condé Nast-published magazine about pay equality.

Sohla El-Waylly says on social media that she hasn’t been paid for appearing in videos for Bon Appetit’s popular YouTube channel, while white editors have. She is calling for people of color on staff to receive “fair titles, fair salaries, and compensation for video appearances,” the wire service also reports.
