A long-lived Portuguese dog holds the notable distinction for being the oldest dog ever recorded in history, Guinness World Records said this week.

The record organization said in a statement that Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo in the coastal Portuguese city of Leiria, has been confirmed as not merely the oldest dog alive but the oldest dog in history.

Bobi “is 30 years 266 days old as of 1 February 2023,” GWR said in the announcement.

The dog’s age has been confirmed by several animal authorities in Portugal.

Bobi reportedly survived being euthanized with his brothers and sisters after his litter was born. Bobi’s owners, meanwhile, told Guiness that the “calm, peaceful environment” of Leiria may have something to do with his astonishing longevity.
