President Donald Trump said that if the U.S. takes over the Gaza Strip and rebuilds it, Palestinians won't have the right to return to the region.

“No, they wouldn’t, because they’re going to have much better housing ... much better,” Trump said during an interview with Fox News that was pre-taped on Saturday and aired Monday.

Many Palestinians have been displaced in the region – largely pushed into the southern part –  as a result of the Israel-Hamas war that began there in October 2023.

In the interview, Trump reiterated what he said last week when first proposing such a plan – that Gaza is now uninhabitable because of the war and that it could be years before the reconstruction is finished.

"I’m talking about building a permanent place for them because if they have to return now, it’ll be years before you could ever – it’s not habitable,” he said.

The president said he is attempting to “make a deal” with Jordan and Egypt to take in displaced Palestinians.

Trump will be meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan on Tuesday to discuss this potential plan with Gaza, according to The Hill newspaper.

Trump suggested last week that the U.S. take over the Gaza Strip and work with development teams from all over the world to rebuild it.
