Tourist who carved name on Rome’s Colosseum apologizes, says he didn’t know how old it was

Ivan Dimitrov, a 27-year-old tourist from England, issued an apology letter to the mayor of Rome Wednesday for etching his and his girlfriend’s names into the Colosseum arena last week. Dimitrov said he did not know the ancient monument was 2,000 years old until after he carved “Ivan + Hayley 23” into the arena’s wall with a key. Dimitrov could face a fine of up to 15,000 euros (about $16,324) and a prison sentence between two to five years if convicted for the vandalism.
