Biden to consider establishing new Grand Canyon monument to block uranium mining
President Joe Biden is considering declaring a large stretch of land around the Grand Canyon as America’s newest national monument in a move that would permanently bar uranium mining in the area. Native American tribes have petitioned the Biden administration to protect the 1.1 million acres of land around the Grand Canyon as the new Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument. Biden’s decision about the proposed park comes as a 2012 Obama ban on new uranium mining in the region is set to expire.
