Raskin casts doubt on accepting Biden pardon

Though Biden, for his part, explicitly indicated that he did not consider the acceptance of his pardon to be an admission of guilt, House Republicans considered their mere issuance to be indicative of some wrongdoing.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., this week cast doubt on whether he would accept a last-minute pardon from President Joe Biden.

The Maryland Democrat was a member of the House Jan. 6 Committee that President Donald Trump and Republicans largely dismissed as a partisan farce. Biden pardoned every member of the panel before leaving office, along with a number of other political allies and members of his family.

Speaking to NPR, Raskin expressed uncertainty as to whether he was even able to reject a pardon, saying "It's not clear to me that a pardon is something you reject or you accept. I think it is a statement of the law, but I'm just not sure."

"I think we have a lot of protection from the speech and debate clause against prosecution. But, I can see people being of mixed mind about whether or not a pardon helps," he added.

Though Biden, for his part, explicitly indicated that he did not consider the acceptance of his pardon to be an admission of guilt, House Republicans considered their mere issuance to be indicative of some wrongdoing.

“I mean, to me, this is basically, if not an actual admission, it's truly the perception of admitting that there was wrongdoing done,” Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., said at the time.

While the Jan. 6 Committee has been the subject of intense scrutiny, Republicans have zeroed in on former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., who led GOP defectors in voting for Trump's impeachment and who served on the panel. Cheney has faced accusations of tampering with a witness during the proceedings.
