Majority of voters favor impeaching Mayorkas: poll
GOP lawmakers have accused Mayorkas of a "breach of trust" and "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law" over his handling of the unprecedented surge in alien arrivals at the southern border.
Republicans on Tuesday advanced articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, setting up a final vote later in the evening, an effort that appears to enjoy majority support among U.S. voters.
GOP lawmakers have accused Mayorkas of a "breach of trust" and "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law" over his handling of the unprecedented surge in alien arrivals at the southern border.
A Rasmussen Reports survey released Tuesday found that 52% of likely U.S. voters support impeaching the DHS secretary compared to 36% who disapprove. A further 12% were unsure. Thirty-six percent strongly approved of the impeachment effort while 25% strongly disapproved.
Conducted Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 4, the survey questioned 901 likely U.S. voters and has a margin of sampling error of +/- 3%.
A final vote is expected at 5:30 p.m. Eastern.
Even as House Republicans move to impeach Mayorkas, Senate Republicans appear poised to block a bipartisan deal to pair aid to Israel and Ukraine with border security reforms, which conservatives insist will likely have little effect on the situation.
