Johnson presses Biden to act on border while Senate talks stall

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Thursday urged President Joe Biden to pursue executive action to secure the border while talks in the Senate have failed to produce a deal.

"The southern border of our nation is being overrun and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is at a breaking point," Johnson warned the president in a letter. "This catastrophe requires you administration's full attention and commitment, particularly since Senate Majority Leader [Chuck] Schumer adjourned the Senate yesterday for the year without considering the commonsense solutions in our House bill (H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023) or taking any other legislative action to address the matter."

Johnson went on to describe the situation at the southern border, highlighting the millions of illegal arrivals at the Mexican frontier and the expected uptick in the coming year.

"All of this is the direct result of your administration's policies," he insisted. "You have clearly undermined America's sovereignty and security by ending the Remain in Mexico policy, reinstating catch-and-release, suspending asylum cooperative agreements with other nations, ignoring existing restraints on the abuse of parole, and halting border wall construction."

The House Speaker urged Biden to unilaterally end the catch-and-release program, restore the Remain-in-Mexico policy, resume constructing the border wall, and to impose a number of executive reforms to address the matter.
