GOP Rep. Green rethinking retirement plans amid urging from Tennessee colleagues

Tennessee Republican Rep. Mark Green has confirmed that he is reconsidering his decision to retire at the end of the current Congress after announcing the move earlier this month.

Green confirmed to The Hill that he is "seriously reconsidering" his plans after Punchbowl News first reported on his retirement. Potentially driving his reconsideration is the urging of his fellow Tennessee lawmakers.

"I am hoping Mark Green will reconsider and get back in TN7. Mark is a solid conservative, and we need him to continue his work on the border," Tennessee GOP Sen. Marsha Blackburn told Punchbowl. Other Republican House members from his delegation have also lent their voices to the effort to convince Green to stay.

Green made his initial retirement announcement in the wake of the House impeaching Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

"Today, with the House having passed H.R. 2 and Secretary Mayorkas impeached, it is time for me to return home," he said. "In the last few months, in reading the writings of our Framers, I was reminded of their intent for representatives to be citizen-legislators, to serve for a season and then return home."

"Our country–and our Congress–is broken beyond most means of repair. I have come to realize our fight is not here within Washington, our fight is with Washington," he added.

Should Green decide to follow through on his retirement, he would be one of several Republican committee chairs to depart at the end of the current term. House Financial Services Committee Chairman Patrick McHenry, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, and House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Kay Granger have all opted against seeking reelection.
