Trump Energy Secretary Rick Perry considering 2024 presidential run
"There’s a lot of time left, and we’ll see how this all works out," Perry said.
Rick Perry, a former Texas governor and Trump Energy secretary, is considering launching a bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination but says his chances of running are small.
"It’s early in the process," Perry told CNN on Sunday. "It certainly is something that I haven’t taken off the table, but the chances of it happening are probably a little bit slim. ... There’s a lot of time left, and we’ll see how this all works out."
When asked whether former President Trump should be the 2024 GOP nominee, Perry replied: "I’m still trying to sort that out for myself."
Perry is Texas' longest-serving governor. He assumed the position in 2000 and won three full terms until he opted to not run for reelection in 2014.
He made an unsuccessful bid for the the 2012 and 2016 GOP presidential nomination before serving in the Trump administration as Energy secretary from 2017 until his resignation in 2019.
Perry left the Energy Department after a whistleblower said then-President Donald Trump had asked Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky to probe now-President Joe Biden and his family.
