Haley announces 2024 GOP presidential campaign, 'Time for a new generation of leadership'

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Tuesday morning announced her campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

"Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections," Haley said in a video announcing her bid. "That has to change. It's time for a new generation of leadership."

She is now the second Republican to seek the party's nomination, after former President Donald Trump. 

Haley, a former United Nations ambassador under Trump, opened her video by reflecting on her childhood. 

"I was the proud daughter of Indian immigrants," she said. "Not black, not white, I was different. But my mom would always say your job is not to look at the differences but the similarities." 

She also singled out who and what she considers the biggest threats to the United States – and vowed if elected to take them head on.

"China and Russia are on the march," the 51-year-old Haley said. "They all think we can be bullied, kicked around. You should know this about me. I don't put up with bullies. And when you kick back, it hurts them more if you're wearing heels." she said.

She also accused the Chinese Community Party of committing "genocide" on parts of the country's population and Iran of "murder[ing] their own people for challenging the government" through protests.

On domestic policy, Haley pledged to be fiscally responsible and secure the U.S. border. 

She has teased running for the GOP nomination for months, using her signature line that she's "never lost an election."

However, she has not run for election in about eight years.
