Zeldin wins New York GOP governor primary over Giuliani, will face incumbent Democrat Gov. Hochul

New York GOP Rep. Lee Zeldin on Tuesday night defeated first-time candidate Andrew Giuliani in the state's Republican gubernatorial primary, advancing to face incumbent Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul in the November general election.

Hochul, who easily won her primary, replaced Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who resigned last year after an investigation led by state Attorney General Letitia James concluded he sexually harassed several of his female staffers over a period of months.

Zeldin is considered by some Republicans to be the GOP's best chance in decades to win the New York governorship.

Andrew Giuliani is the son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He served for four years as a White House aide to former President Trump. His hotly contested primary battle with Zeldin also featured former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and businessman Harry Wilson.

Joining Hochul, the state's first female governor, on the November ballot will be Antonio Delgado, who became the lieutenant governor last month following the sudden resignation of Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin, who was indicted on charges of bribery and campaign finance fraud.

James ran uncontested in Tuesday's primary to keep her post. She will face off in the fall against Republican Michael Henry. Joe Pinion will be the Republican nominee facing incumbent Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer, who is also the Senate majority leader.

Some New York primaries, including all congressional races, were bumped to August 23 after a federal judge ordered the state to move back its primary date due to a struggle over drawing new district maps during the redistricting process.
