California Democrat Sen. Feinstein announces won't seek reelection
The resignation opens up a competitive Democrat primary for the seat long held by Feinstein
California Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced Tuesday she's retiring at the end of her term and won't seek 2024 reelection.
"I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends," Feinstein, 89, tweeted.
Feinstein has served in Congress for over three decades, and her announcement is expected to make way for a very competitive Democrat primary for the high-profile seat.
Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter have already announced plans to run for Feinstein's seat.
The senator's announcement is not entirely unexpected. Though Feinstein has recently said she remains fit to serve, she's faced reports about declining health and memory that have put pressure on her to resign.
