Congress certifies Trump's 2024 election victory
Though traditionally a procedural matter, the certification process has come under greater scrutiny in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, incident at the Capitol during which supporters of Trump disrupted the proceedings.
A joint session of Congress on Monday certified the results of the 2024 presidential election, without objection.
The process itself included the review of each state's electoral slates and an affirmation of their authenticity. The certification formalized President-elect Donald Trump's November win. He claimed 312 electoral votes to Vice President Kamala Harris's 226.
Harris herself presided over the certification process.
Though traditionally a procedural matter, the certification process has come under greater scrutiny in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, incident at the Capitol during which supporters of Trump disrupted the proceedings. Monday's proceedings concluded largely without incident.
Trump has maintained that he legitimately won the 2020 contest.
