Biden suggests he's only running to keep Trump out of White House: 'We cannot let him win'
Trump currently boasts a 2.0% lead over Biden in the RealClearPolitics polling average.
President Joe Biden on Tuesday suggested that his primary motivation for seeking reelection in 2024 was to prevent former President Donald Trump from reclaiming the White House and that he might not seek to remain in office otherwise.
"If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running. But we cannot let him win," he said, according to The Hill. Biden's remarks came at a campaign event in Massachusetts and followed the commander-in-chief's asserting that Trump presents a threat to democracy.
Opponents of the former president have long suggested Trump held little regard for the U.S. Constitution or democratic institutions, though such rhetoric has escalated in recent weeks as polling shows Trump edging out Biden. Trump currently boasts a 2.0% lead over Biden in the RealClearPolitics polling average.
Biden's remark comes amid mounting speculation that the president's advanced age and possible cognitive decline have rendered him unfit to serve in office. Biden's penchant for making awkward gaffes and telling bizarre anecdotes in a bid to relate to his audience have fueled much of that speculation.
