Janet Gretzky, the wife of Canadian hockey star Wayne Gretzky, has shared President-elect Donald Trump's suggestion that her husband attempt to replace Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the country's next leader.

Trudeau has witnessed increasing opposition to his nine-year tenure as prime minister recently. One of his strongest allies has even promised to bring a vote of "no confidence" in Trudeau's administration when the Canadian parliament returns next month.

Trudeau's financial minister also recently left the administration.

Trump made the suggestion on Truth Social on Wednesday, stating that Canadians should start a movement to draft Wayne Gretzky as their next leader, even though the hockey legend appeared to have no interest.

"I just left Wayne Gretzky, 'The Great One' as he is known in Ice Hockey circles," Trump shared on social media. "I said,  'Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada - You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.' He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement. It would be so much fun to watch!"

Janet Gretzky shared the social media post on her Instagram story on Wednesday, along with a link to the post.

Wayne Gretzky, who is now 63, spent 20 seasons in the National Hockey League on four different teams. He has also coached hockey teams and is considered the greatest hockey player of all time.

Trump's support also comes after he recommended Canada joins the United States as the 51st state, because the taxes of its citizens “are far too high.

“If Canada was to become our 51st State, their Taxes would be cut by more than 60%."

Gretzky was last seen in Trump's circle last month at his Mar-a-Lago resort, which he attended after Trump's electoral win while sporting a red "Make America Great Again" cap.
