Trump names Grenell as new interim director of Kennedy Center

President Donald Trump on Monday announced that his envoy for special missions Ric Grenell would serve as interim executive director of the Kennedy Center, days after he said he was replacing several new members of its board.

Trump last week said that he would be replacing current Chairman David Rubenstein, but the Kennedy Center over the weekend said it had not received any official communications from the White House about the oustings.

The president also said last week that he himself would serve as the chairman of the new board of trustees.

The announcement comes after Grenell, who previously served as Trump's acting director of national intelligence and ambassador to Germany in his first term, recently went to Venezuela to help rescue six Americans detained by its government.

“I am pleased to announce that Ric Grenell will serve as the Interim Executive Director of The Kennedy Center," the president said on Truth Social. "Ric shares my Vision for a GOLDEN AGE of American Arts and Culture, and will be overseeing the daily operations of the Center. NO MORE DRAG SHOWS, OR OTHER ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA — ONLY THE BEST. RIC, WELCOME TO SHOW BUSINESS!"

It was not immediately clear why Grenell, who has a background in national security, was selected to serve as interim director.

Trump has also not announced what members would be removed from the board, but The Atlantic reported last week that he plans to remove new board members, including former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and former President Joe Biden adviser Mike Donilon.
