Trump jokes about seeking third presidential term, urges GOP unity in Congress during FL retreat
Trump joked that he would use the massive fundraising haul that he brought in during the 2024 presidential election to seek a third term in 2028.
President Donald Trump on Monday evening joked about seeking a third presidential term and urged Republicans in Congress to be united in advancing key legislation during remarks at the House GOP's annual policy retreat.
The retreat kicked off Monday at the Trump National Doral resort in Miami, Florida, where lawmakers are expected to address how to resolve divisions within their conference in order to effectively pass Trump's agenda, including his large budget reconciliation bill.
During his remarks on the opening day of the retreat, Trump joked that he would use the massive fundraising haul that he brought in during the 2024 presidential election to seek a third term in 2028. Presidents are currently limited to two terms total.
“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100 percent sure, because I don’t know. I think I’m not allowed to run again, I’m not sure,” Trump said, before turning to House Speaker Mike Johnson. “Am I allowed to run again, Mike? I better not get you involved in that.”
The comment was not the first time Trump joked about keeping his spot in the White House past the current term. Trump jokingly encouraged House Republicans in November to "change" the law to allow him to run for a third term, according to The Hill.
Although both instances appeared to be a joke, Tennessee GOP Rep. Andy Ogles last week proposed a constitutional amendment that would allow a president to seek a third term if the terms are nonconsecutive. But it is not expected to pass Congress.
Trump also encouraged House Republicans to unite behind his agenda, including his border and funding bills, but said the way in which his priorities were passed was not as important.
“The Republican Party has to stick together,” Trump said. “Everything is so hard — always have two or three or five or something people that just don’t want to do it. And you just gotta do it. You just gotta do it. Make life easy.”
