President Trump weighs in on possible name changes for the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians

President Trump on Monday weighed in on the cultural debate over renaming iconic sports teams, drawing a connection between the potential name changes and political correctness.

The Washington Redskins football team and the Cleveland Indians baseball team are facing pressure as some call for name changes.

"They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct," Trump tweeted. "Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry right now!"

College, professional and other sport teams in the U.S. with mascots or names connected to Native Americans have for years faced pressure from some groups asking them to make such a change. The groups argue the logos are culturally insensitive. The May 25 death of Black American George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis has renewed such calls. 

The Indians and Redskins have recently published statements addressing the name controversy, though neither statement explicitly says that the team's name would change.

"In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team's name," a statement said. "This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks."

And a statement from the Cleveland Indians said, "we are committed to engaging our community and appropriate stakeholders to determine the best path forward with regard to our team name."
