President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday announced former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his new choice for attorney general.

The nomination comes after former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration in order to avoid distracting from Trump's new agenda in January.

The former president applauded Bondi's reputation as the state's first female attorney general and a former prosecutor of 20 years.

"For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans - Not anymore," Trump said in a statement. "Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!"
