Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin ties Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record
Ovechkin made the record-tying 894th goal during the 1,486th game of his career. It was his second goal of the game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Washington Capitals' forward Alex Ovechkin on Friday night tied Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, marking his 894th goal in the third period of the game.
Gretzky, who was in the audience at the time Ovechkin scored the goal, set the record in 1999 while playing for the New York Rangers. Gretzky has been traveling with the Capitals since April 2 so he can watch the moment Ovechkin eventually breaks the record.
Ovechkin made the record-tying goal during the 1,486th game of his career, according to the New York Post. It was his second goal of the game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
"EIGHT. NINETY. FOUR. WE ARE WITNESSING GR8NESS," the Washington Capitals posted on X, along with a clip of the goal.
Ovechkin was first drafted by the Capitals in 2004.
The team ended up beating the Blackhawks 5-3.
