Texas Gov. Abbott did not attend any funerals for victims of the Uvalde shooting: report

According to a report out of Houston, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) did not show up for any of the funerals of the 19 children and two adults who were killed in late May in the mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde. 

The governor's schedule, initially obtained by ABC News, indicates that the last time Abbott was in Uvalde was on June 5 to attend a community worship service. The schedule, however, does not mention the funerals of any of the 21 victims. The final funeral was for 11-year-old Layla Salazar on June 16.

State Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who represents Uvalde, criticized the governor for failing to attend any of the funerals, or to stop back by the town for any meaningful amount of time. 

"I don't want this to sound like some political assault on him, but at the end of the day he hasn't been there since Day 5, when the president came ... We had a failed response on giving resources to families," Gutierrez told MSNBC this week. 

"He did not go to one single funeral – and quite honestly, many of the families didn't want him there," he said.

The state senator's sentiments correspond with what some families of victims have said in recent days. On July 13, Angel Garza – the father of 10-year-old victim Amerie Jo Garza – said during a news conference that "since this happened, Gov. Abbott has yet to reach out." He noted that GOP Sen. Ted Cruz had attended several prayer vigils, but had not personally reached out to the families of the victims, which his one-time rival Beto O'Rourke had done.

"We've had Sen. Gutierrez in our living room, willing to come and talk to us. We've had Beto O'Rourke coming to our private meeting to fight with us. He marched with us. That means something to us. The fact that you're reaching out just to see how we're doing means something to us," said Garza.

"Everybody that's getting ready to vote, I want you guys to know that. These guys don't have compassion for us. They don't care. [Abbott] doesn't care that all these children were murdered and these teachers were murdered. Y'all need to realize that," the grieving father said.

The report indicates that Sen. Cruz planned to meet with several families of victims last week, but that the families canceled the meeting. The mayor of Uvalde, Don McLaughlin, said recently that he has not heard from Abbott in a month.

Abbott is currently in an election cycle, competing against O'Rourke to remain in office. Last week, Abbott said at a press conference that he's "been there multiple times to Uvalde for multiple purposes ... and I will be going many more times."

A spokeswoman for the governor said that Abbott has visited the community several times and met with "every family who requested a meeting."

"Many families requested private funerals, and the Governor and First Lady instead sent flowers and condolences to let the loved ones know they remain in their prayers," she said.
