Florida reveals objections that led it to reject African American Studies program

Florida this week revealed its list of objections that led it to reject a proposed African American Studies program from inclusion in the state’s curriculum, citing several extremist and far-left teachings promulgated by the course.

State Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz Jr. tweeted on Friday that the course was “filled with Critical Race Theory and other obvious violations of Florida law.” The state under Gov. Ron DeSantis has moved to ban ideological instruction in public schools, including CRT and other left-wing ideologies. 

Among the examples Diaz cited include writings in “black queer studies,” “black feminist literary thought” and “intersectionality and activism.” 

Diaz noted that in one case, a study on “the reparations movement,” the entirety of the course material advocated reparations. “There is no critical perspective or balancing opinion in this lesson.” 

The White House this week criticized the state’s decision to reject the course, with Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre calling the decision “incomprehensible.”
